Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

Announces Seventh Inductee Class

 

PHILADELPHIA-At a press conference today, the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame announced the members of its seventh class of Inductees.  The new class includes 15 individuals and the first organization to be inducted.

Inductee Class VII includes: Bobby Jones, Bobby Shantz, Dick Allen, Elizabeth Becker, Hobey Baker, "Jersey" Joe Walcott, Jim Phelan, Leroy Kelly, Marianne Stanley, Mike Quick, Phil Jasner, Ron Hextall, Tom Brookshier, Tug McGraw, William Hyndman III and the Lighthouse Boys Club, Lifetime Commitment Inductee.

 "This year's class truly epitomizes the Hall of Fame's all-sports, all-levels charter," said Steve Tallant, Hall of Fame Vice-President. "Class VII includes legends from 8 different sports at the professional and collegiate level as well as amateur, Olympic and youth sports."

Joining MC Dan Baker at today's press event, were new Inductees Dick Allen, Mike Quick and Phil Jasner. 

Quick reflected on his time in Philadelphia, "To me now, this (Philadelphia) is really home," Quick said, "My kids grew up here, I became a man here and I am very pleased that the Hall of Fame decided to invite me as one of the Inductees."

Mark McGraw represented his father, Tug McGraw's, Sam Lee, president of Lighthouse Soccer Club, spoke for the Lifetime Commitment Inductee and Guy Gadowsky, head coach of Princeton University's Men's Hockey team represented football and hockey legend Hobey Baker.

"Well I think you all know how much my Dad loved the city of Philadelphia and especially the fans," said McGraw,  "And to be honored into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame is an honor for our family, it's an honor for our Tug McGraw Foundation and Team McGraw which continues on Tug's legacy"

Philadelphia Sports Hall of Famer Harvey Pollack said a few words on behalf of Bobby Jones.  Joining Harvey on hand were fellow Hall of Famers Bill Ellerbee and Bill Conlin.

Also on hand in support were Carl Cherkin from the Philadelphia Union,  Jennifer Brusstar and Jeff McMahon from the Tug McGraw Foundation and Joe Brancato, Dave Jordan and Dick Rosen of the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society.,
