Sports Legends Gather to Celebrate Philly Hall of Fame Class V Induction

 

PHILADELPHIA November 5, 2008 – Legendary Philadelphia sports figures will be gathering on Thursday November 13, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Penn’s Landing to celebrate the induction of Class V into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. Expected to attend this year’s Induction Ceremony are inductees from Class V: Leroy Burrell, Harold Charmichael, Stan Hochman, Herb Magee, Dorothy Porter, Lionel Simmons and Al Wistert.

Also a part of this year’s class are Maurice Cheeks, Ed Delahanty, Tommy Loughran, Fred Shero and Mickey Vernon, along with the 1929 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics.

Reuniting to honor this year’s class are past Inductees Bill Campbell, Bill Ellerbee, Bob Levy, Chuck Bednarik, Sonny Hill, Harry Kalas, Tommy McDonald, Harvey Pollack, Jack Whitaker, John Chaney, Ray Didinger, Tom Brookshier and Pete Retzlaff. Also joining the festivities will be members of the Flyers’ Broad Street Bullies teams to recognize the honoring of their coach, Fred Shero.

“This celebration of Philadelphia’s all-time greats comes at an exciting time in our city’s sporting history, with the Phillies and the Soul having just celebrated championships this year”, said Ken Avallon, President of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. “We are proud and thrilled to be able to share the accomplishments of Class V with our past inductees, supporters and all Philly sports fans.”

The ceremony features the long-time stadium announcer for the World Champion Phillies and the Eagles, Dan Baker as Master of Ceremonies.

Festivities include a cocktail reception, dinner and the Induction banquet. Attendees may also participate in the silent auction and view the museum exhibit featuring items from the Hall of Fame’s unique collection of Philadelphia sports artifacts.

The cocktail reception begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the Induction Ceremony. The banquet is open to the public and tickets can be purchased online at http://www.phillyhall.org/classv or by calling (215) 886-6657 Ext. 1.
